Kedougou

Through Salif’s investment this was the first time that children had access to a good school and a sporting academy within the village. The investment does not end just with providing facilities to play football, funds raised go towards paying for educational facilities such as furniture, books and employing teachers. The charity has also provided a school for teaching professional trades – creating the electricians and carpenters of tomorrow, providing them with skills that be reinvested in providing a better community and to build further facilities. Youth aged 16 years train each day apart from Sunday and Wednesday. Age groups 6 to 14 attend each day apart from Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The programme is run by school teachers and PE instructors, they liaise with each other to make sure every one is attending the schools, if kids don’t attend school they cannot enter into the sporting scheme. The programme is building community pride and encouraging self respect for the children, they even help each other with there homework. Once a year buses are hired and all the kids are taken on a trip to the capital, this is the first time for many of them to get a chance to see a professional football game, go to a beach or even experience the world outside their town.

2008 has seen the programme continue with the donation of used football kit, boots and shirts donated from Stoke City Football Club, have helped to encourage players of the future and costs nothing to the club. Through Salif the charity has been able to purchase a piece of land from the government, which will be developed to provide artificial pitches, lighting and changing facilities. Electricity is already installed and a well with an electric water pump has been dug. 6 o clock each evening sees the local community arrive to get water from the well as the local water supply is very unreliable. The future aims are to work closely with other organisations to achieve further goals such as facilities for girls.
